“All the Israelites 20 years old or more who were able to serve in Israel's army were counted according to their families. The total number was 603,550. The ancestral tribe of the Levites, however, was not counted along w/ the others. The Lord had said to Moses: "You must not count the tribe of Levi or include them in the census of the other Israelites. Instead, appoint the Levites to be in charge of the tabernacle of the covenant law—over all its furnishings & everything belonging to it. They are to carry the tabernacle & all its furnishings; they are to take care of it & encamp around it.” ~Numbers 1:45-50
God calls on Moses to number the men of Israel but not the Levites. He holds back that count for now stating only that they are to serve as keepers of the temple. Later God explains more.
"I have taken the Levites from among the Israelites in place of the first male offspring of every Israelite woman. The Levites are mine, "Count the Levites by their families & clans. Count every male a month old or more." The total number of Levites counted at the Lord's command by Moses & Aaron according to their clans, including every male a month old or more, was 22,000. The Lord said to Moses, "Count all the firstborn Israelite males who are a month old or more and make a list of their names. The total number of firstborn males a month old or more, listed by name, was 22,273...Take the Levites in place of all the firstborn of Israel, and the livestock of the Levites in place of their livestock. The Levites are to be mine. I am the Lord. To redeem the 273 firstborn Israelites who exceed the number of the Levites, collect 5 shekels for each one, according to the sanctuary shekel, which weighs 20 gerahs.”
Numbers 3:12a,15a,39-40,43,45-47
God wanted them to understand every life has value. He chose these 2 groups to show us that we can not pay our way. The only way we can be redeemed is by a perfect sacrifice of Jesus life for ours. He chooses us. Will you choose Him?
